final script

EXT. WALL OUTSIDE MOUNT GARDENS

DAY 1: April is sitting on the wall fiddling with camera. Dylan and Sally arrive. Dylan steals camera off April and Sally looks nervous.

DYLAN
(to April)
Do you want to get mugged?

Turns and tilts camera, April and Sally start walking up the lane

SALLY
Guys I’m sorry this lane still creeps me out

DYLAN
It was like 1999 Sally, relax

APRIL
It’s perfect. It’s also good to choose a location not on the list that the film course people gave us.

The girls reach the signposts. April and Dylan start walking up the narrower lane. Sally frowns sarcastically
DYLAN
Relaaaax Sal. No one lives there.

APRIL
Yeah my mum said that no one has seen anyone enter that house in years. Why would they? A family was murdered in that house to be fair.

SALLY
Will we be filming just round this corner?

APRIL
Yeah this is it!

DAY 2: EXT. THE BACK LANE

April is sitting down fiddling with the camera. Dylan is lying down with her head in April’s lap. Sally is looking over April’s shoulder.

DYLAN
Right, April, direct us. Tell us what you want us to do.

APRIL
Well, first of all this is all I’ve got. My dad wouldn’t pay for more equipment for me to use. So the acting has got to be good.

April looks at the two girls and they look slightly pathetic. They all burst out laughing. Music starts

SALLY
Hey, you wanted a horror type thing. Why don’t we go poke our heads over the top of the gate of that creepy, deserted house? Check it out. Cop the vibe.

DYLAN (at the same time as April)
Very good idea.

APRIL (at the same time as Dylan)
Yes!

SALLY
Was obviously joking.

APRIL
I want the film to be based on the true story of the murder that happened in that house. So I was thinking you guys could be the kids that used to play in this lane.

DAY 3: EXT. GIRLS STANDING IN A CIRCLE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BACK LANE
Music carries on, and the girls can be heard playing rock paper scissors

APRIL
Three, two, one

Sally holds out her fist and Dylan holds out her palm then clasps Sally’s fist. Music stops. Girls look awkwardly at Sally. She looks terrified. Music starts again, Sally is getting pulled by Dylan and April, they can be seen looking over gate (not much given away of what the courtyard looks like). A short interlude – short shots of the girls messing around and experimenting with the camera and their scripts.

DYLAN
What’s all the fuss about that house then, now we’ve actually seen it?

SALLY
If that’s a hint at me…

APRIL
Same clothes for day 3 then? We need to make sure that it looks like this is all one afternoon

SALLY
Of course Ape. (looks at Dylan rummaging in her bag) Wait Dyl do you have the script and stuff?


APRIL
I put them in her bag after we looked at it this morning
DYLAN
Everything’s pretty much missing

APRIL
Shut up

DYLAN
You said you put them in my bag, April. Like I’m sorry to break it to you but they’re not there.

DAY 4: EXT. GIRLS ARE WALKING UP THE NARROWER LANE
The girls are walking

SALLY
Dylan did you find the scripts?

APRIL
No, I had to print new ones! It’s really strange they just disappeared

The girls reach the top, turn left and discover that the gate is open

SALLY
Guys, that is so weird

APRIL
Sal…

SALLY
No, that’s very weird. No one lives there remember?

DYLAN
Postman?

APRIL
To be fair no one lives there. But on the other hand… Estate agent?

SALLY
April!

APRIL
Alright, alright… It’s a little bit creepy. Dyl

DYLAN
Yes boss


APRIL
Nah, nah it’s fine

Dylan shoots April a smile. Fades to black. Fades back into different camera setting – black and white (the POV of April’s camera) (the rest of the film is filmed in this setting)

APRIL
(out of view of the camera)
Sal, can you move the bag for me? Don’t worry about getting in the shot, I just want to shoot some stuff then I’ll cut them later.

Sally walks into view of the shot, moves the bag, then smiles and waves at the camera. April walks in shot of the camera and does the same. They both then walk out of shot of the camera again.


SALLY
Dylaannn you’re stupidddd!

APRIL
Shhh. She’s brave. Alright, Dyl whenever you’re ready!

Dylan walks out from the driveway, looking scared, and runs through the gate at the end of the lane and turns right into the courtyard. There is a 5 second pause.

APRIL
Cut!

Dylan walks out and poses triumphantly

DAY 5: EXT BACK LANE, (DIFFERENT) CAMERA SETTING ALREADY SET UP

Sally walks out of a different driveway meekly

DYLAN
Oh my, Sal, it’s really not that bad. The courtyard is modern. No spider webs or bloody knifes.

SALLY
Oh look at you all big now you’ve met eyes with the town’s haunted house

APRIL
If you’re going to be sarcastic about it, you can do it! Please, Sally. I need to experiment for my film.

SALLY
Fine, fine. She returns to her position in the driveway

APRIL
Whenever you’re ready

Sally walks out of the driveway, through the gate and turns right into the courtyard. She pauses 5 seconds, then we hear her scream. Another three second pause.

APRIL
Okay come out that’s good!

Sally doesn’t come out, 5 second pause

DYLAN
Sally?

APRIL
(after a pause)
What the hell?

She starts walking towards the courtyard, then breaks into a jog. Dylan follows her, but then turns around and runs back for the camera. From the camera and Dylan’s POV, we see the courtyard getting closer, then we see the courtyard, then the house as Dylan walks through it shouting Sally and April’s names, as they are nowhere to be seen or heard. Something makes Dylan gasp in a panic and she drops the camera.

The camera changes out of black and white, and back to the original setting, and a long shot of the open gate. We see the gate closing and the film ends. (cut to black with a sound effect)

At the beginning, the diegetic sound of the emergency service operator's voices overlap each other which creates an atmospheric feeling as we watch the film. If jump cuts were used, it would be harder to focus on their voices because we would have more of a visual distraction on screen. Research into target audience

My target audience is an audience of the age of the characters in my short film; the film is directed at teenagers. My film consists of elements similar to the Blair Witch Project ; a film about three film students who travel to a small town to collect documentary footage about the Blair Witch. Their film footage is found, and the film consists of the audience watching their footage. The film makers used social media to access their target audience. 67% of social media users are 18-29, therefore social media is a good place to advertise this film. My film is more light hearted and less scary than the Blair Witch Project , and the element of horror only really comes in at the end, therefore people who would probably be interested in my film would be of the age between 13-18.

Health & Safety Issues

I am initially filming by a main road - so it is important to keep a very close eye on film equipment, because it is expensive and must not be stolen Some of the ground filmed on is unstable - must be careful when running / walking up and down lane (tie up shoelaces etc) MAKE SURE CAMERA IS TIGHTLY SCREWED ON TRIPOD - otherwise it will fall off and break
